Named for legendary football coach Vince Lombardi, who was treated for cancer at Georgetown University Hospital, Georgetown Lombardi was founded under the leadership of the Honorable John F. Potter, M.D., with funds from the University, federal government and private sources. In 1974, Georgetown Lombardi became the 16th National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center-a prestigious designation it holds to this day.

The Center's unique, defining quality is its adherence to the principle of cura personalis - or "care of the whole person" - a fact that is evidenced through the Center's patient-focused, multidisciplinary approach to research and cancer care.

With glamorous auction items, a luxury car raffle, dinner, and dancing, the Lombardi Gala at the Washington Hilton was an amazing night. There were many patrons attending, in fact, well over 900. Blacktie is certain many of them bought the $100.00 raffle tickets, and all hoped to win the 2012 Lexus CT 200h Hybrid, provided by longtime partner, Washington Area Lexus Dealers.

100 percent of the proceeds of this gala go directly to Lombardi for cancer research, education and treatment.

This year’s honorary chair of the Lombardi Gala was DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players’ Association. Smith’s wife of 18 years was diagnosed with breast cancer four years ago.

“This event helps solidify the link between the great traditions of football and the amazing work done by the people at the Lombardi Cancer Center. My wife is a breast cancer survivor. We’ve seen how cancer can impact a family. Thanks to Lombardi, we’ve also seen how people who are dedicated to eliminating this disease can come together to make it better for families who have been affected,” said Smith.

The evening also recognized Mr. Thomas J. Donohue and Mrs. Elizabeth Donohue with the Margaret L. Hodges Leadership Award for their lifelong dedication to helping others in the community and contributing their time, resources, and energy to numerous charitable endeavors.

A cocktail reception and silent auction at 6:00 PM got things started, followed by dinner, raffle, award presentations, and dancing at 8:00 PM.
